South Korean government 'encouraging' restructuring of petrochemical industry
4:08 AM MST | December 31, 2015
South Korea is “encouraging” its petrochemical industry to reduce production capacity voluntarily as part of a broader initiative to restructure industrial production in the country, according to a statement from the Financial Services Commission (FSC; Seoul). The South Korean government announced an industrial restructuring plan yesterday. If companies operating in targeted sectors fail to heed the government’s advice, it will step in, the FSC statement adds. South Korea’s petrochemical sector traditionally exports much of its output to China, which is increasingly self-sufficient in certain petrochemical products. Demand is also slowing in China and other parts of Asia.
The plan specifically targets the country's purified terephthalic acid (PTA) industry. The government is encouraging PTA producers to reduce capacity by a combined 30%, or 1.5 million m.t./year. The country's PTA producers accumulated a deficit of 845 billion South Korean won ($718.7 million) between 2012 and November 2015, FSC says.
